Did you know that the word “espadrille” is a French term which originates form the catalan name of “esperdenya?”. This word refers to shoes that have been made from “esparto” which is a fine yet tough grass.
Even though it is possible to buy these with a high or wedge heel; the traditional espadrille which has been made in Spain since the 14th Century, was made with a flat sole that was constructed by using rubber, crepe or rope. It was worn by both men and women and is still a firm favourite to this day.
The modern espadrilles like the ones that you see here at Shoe Zone, are made from natural fibres or synthetic fibre rope. The upper part can be made from leather, cotton, canvas or suede. At Shoe Zone, the upper part is made of cotton or canvas.
They are renowned for being comfortable and hardwearing and are very popular with women for wearing with leggings, jeans, tracksuit bottoms and shorts as well as skirts and casual style trousers. This means that you will be pulling them out of that shoe cupboard for years to come.
