One of the burgeoning fashion trends we’re seeing this year is the all-white outfit. White has always been a fashionable colour and one that stands out to make a statement. However, not all of us choose to wear it because it can be hard to wear.
As summer has just begun and the season of lawn tennis, garden parties, strawberries and cream and of course the iconic Wimbledon tournament is upon us, we’ve put together this post on how to wear white this summer. If you’re feeling up to the challenge and want to revolutionise your summer wardrobe, then read on, our tips will help you out massively.
Ways to Wear White
If you’re looking for ways to wear white, we’ve got you covered. We’ve got some ideas on how to wear white that will have you looking on-trend for the summer and will broaden your wardrobe horizons.
Back to Basics
The first way is by keeping it simple. If you wear a plain white t-shirt with some white denim jeans, the only thing you have to think about with your outfit are your shoes and jacket. For example, a blue denim jacket and nude wedges with your white ensemble will look chic and it’s easy to pull off. White goes with everything, so you should already have plenty of clothes at your disposal to create a white-dominant outfit that’s fit for parties, work, anything really!
If you’re going down the exclusively all-white route, there’s a couple things to consider that will ensure your outfit isn’t one-dimensional. The first of these is layers. Try layering up with different white garments. For example, trousers, a shirt, jacket and overcoat all in white and worn at the same time will create a bold look. It’s radiant, looks almost futuristic and will make your outfit look polished and refined. Admittedly, that may be too many layers for summer but who says an all-white outfit can only be worn in the summer months?
Add Depth with Texture
Another way is to mix up the textures. For example, pair a white cable knit jumper with white jeans. Not only will this help you out in the event of a spillage, but the different textures add depth to your outfit. Wearing only a white t-shirt with white jeans is a lazy attempt at the all-white trend. Textures and layers will help bring ice-cold, snowy refreshment to the garish world of summer fashion.
If you don’t want to go all-white, but want white to dominate, incorporate prints to accentuate the white tones. Subtle prints won’t draw too much attention from the white but will emphasise it and contrast with it in a pleasing way.
Choose your shoes and accessories wisely with an all-white outfit. They’re the only way to add a little splash of colour to your outfit and when done correctly, will tie your whole look together. Some bright shoes would make a great accent piece for example, and neutral tones are always, always a good idea with an all-white outfit too.
What to Wear with White Jeans
White jeans. You may love them, you may hate them, but there’s no denying that when worn right, they look amazing. They hit that summer aesthetic perfectly, for men and women, and it just so happens that they’re very in right now.
Let’s kick things off with men’s white jeans. Right off the bat, make sure they fit. This rule applies for women too, but women generally wear jeans that fit them well. Men are often the guilty party when it comes to wearing ill-fitting jeans. Baggy white jeans belong in early noughties’ rap videos and not in your wardrobe! We’re not sure that baggy jeans belong in anyone’s wardrobe, but white ones especially don’t. They don’t have to be skin-tight, but if you’re going to wear white jeans make sure they fit well.
For men as with women, almost anything goes with white jeans. Pair them with a navy blazer for sophisticated, preppy looks. White jeans go really well with most shirts too, from blue denim to floral Hawaiian numbers. Pair with contrasting t-shirts for a bold, head-turning look. For example, if you normally wear all-black, try swapping out your black jeans for white jeans in the summer. It’ll give your familiar style a fresh summer reboot.
Choose the Right Shoes
Ensure that you wear them with a good pair of shoes that you love. Wearing white jeans will draw attention to your legs and therefore, your feet. There’s no good in wearing white jeans if they’re going to be connected to tatty shoes. Make sure they’re snappy and make sure you like them.
Similar rules apply for women’s white jeans. Ensure they fit well, keep them clean and pair them with shoes you love. In terms of what to actually wear with them, you’re not really limited at all. From summer to winter, white jeans can be worn all year round and will go well with most clothes.
We’ve really loved seeing white jeans being paired with the classic shoe of the 90s, mules. A great transition outfit is mules, white jeans and a big, textured coat. Loafers also look great with white jeans, add a bold blazer into the mix and you’ve got an alternative statement outfit.
How Can Men Wear White?
Wearing white is a harder feat for men to pull off than women. Especially all-white. That’s a territory that isn’t really explored by men unless they’re playing at Wimbledon or impersonating Elvis. White jeans are easy to pull off. A white tee even easier. But an all-white outfit is not for the faint of heart. Here are some of our tips.
Our first tip actually comes from one of the big fashion houses, so you know it’s a good one. For an all-white outfit, choose clothes that are broken up by piping. The piping will frame your clothes, and coloured accessories such as bright socks or a colourful pocket square provide pleasing colour combinations and a bit of relief from a pure white outfit.
Think about the situation you’re going to be in with your white clothes. If there’s a higher-than-usual chance you could stain your clothes, leave the white at home. If it’s a low-impact affair where the integrity of your clothes’ whiteness will be preserved, then have at it.
We mentioned to only wear white jeans that fit. If you’re going to wear white clothes at all, make sure they fit. With the exception of t-shirts, white clothes draw attention and don’t suit being too baggy or too tight. Unless your white trousers are linen, make sure they’re well-fitted, and even if they are linen, it doesn’t hurt. Ensure your outfit looks crisp, thoughtful and polished.
