The warmer weather is approaching (even if it doesn’t always seem like it!) and soon, our winter wardrobe will be replaced with shorts, sandals and light, floaty dresses.
If like us you like to buy new summer staples each year, when it comes to sandals you could be at a bit of a loss when deciding what styles to choose; do you go for strappy flat sandals or should you go for those chunky wedge sandals?
We, however, want to focus our attention on women’s mules. Over the last couple of years they’ve seen a massive resurgence in popularity, especially block-heeled mules and sliders. But how do you wear mules and what do you wear with them? Let’s take a look…
How to Wear Flat Mules
Probably one of the easiest styles of sandal to wear, flat mules simply slip on and off, making them the perfect footwear choice for lazy days around the house or for chilling out in the beer garden of your favourite pub.
Right now, the 90’s are high up on the style stakes and flat mules were right at the forefront the first time around too. The closed-toe mule style became popular on catwalks and has remained a fashionista-favourite (on and off) ever since. This style is perfect if you want to add a classic touch to a somewhat formal outfit, so works particularly well with tailored trousers that taper at the ankle. Opt for a high-waist pair and a loose-fitting jacket to really capture that 90’s vibe. Go for open-toe flat mules if you want to show off those perfectly-pedicured tootsies!
If you’d prefer something far more relaxed, then sliders and toe-post mules are where it’s at. Both of these styles look great with shorts, but if you’re not quite ready to break those out, try mules with skinny jeans and a slouchy t-shirt for a top-notch chilled out look.
How to Wear Heeled Mules
Heeled mules can be a surprisingly comfortable choice. They offer support to the insole of the foot, and as a general rule, will offer quite a lot of coverage to the top of the foot too. There’s no denying that heeled mules are back in fashion right now, with many a celeb pictured wearing them out and about. One particularly favoured style right now is the block-heel mule with its simple, clean looks and ease of wear, there’s no surprise it’s a winner.
Heeled mules look great with skinny jeans, they’re also a great choice with wide leg palazzo pants and linen trousers alike, making them the perfect footwear for enjoying the warm summer evenings in style.
If you’d prefer not to wear trousers or jeans, then heeled mules can look great with skirts and dresses too. Going for a more delicate pair such as those with kitten heels will add a touch of femininity to your outfit. If however you’d rather work on a more retro vibe, try a wedge mule with platform sole, these are great for adding length to your legs too, if you’re on the shorter side.
How to Wear Mules With Dresses
As we’ve just mentioned, you may not want to wear mules with trousers or jeans, so dresses are a great alternative. Right now, sliders are a big deal and this style is perfect if you want to keep your look young with an urban edge. Team them with a relaxed jersey maxi dress and cropped denim jacket for a super comfy, super chilled look that’s great for going about your everyday business with very little effort.
If you’re feeling daring, high-heeled mules can look great when getting dressed up for a night out too. Team them with a shirt-dress and a contrasting waist belt for a relaxed, summer look that doesn’t really take all that much effort either!
Can You Wear Mules With Skinny Jeans?
Absolutely! In fact… we highly recommend it! Skinny jeans and mules make the perfect combination, regardless of the style you go for. Skinny jeans work well with flat mules, sliders and wedge mules alike, as well as heeled mules if you want a more dressy look. Skinny jeans that are cut off at the ankle are great and are perfect for keeping things fuss-free, and there’s also no better feeling than the warm sun on your feet, right?! The chilled-out vibe of mules means you can keep things relaxed with the style of top you choose; go for baggy, oversized t-shirts and thin jumpers for a stylish yet effortless look that’s bang on trend.
How to Wear Mules to Work
Mules can be one of those styles that’s easy to be unsure of when it comes to wearing them for work. Not all work environments would deem them to be appropriate, but styled correctly, they can be a really nice alternative to the usual footwear you’d normally wear for work. Block-heeled mules with a sling back can work really well with trousers and dresses too, just be sure you check out the policy on wearing open-toed footwear at your workplace beforehand.
When it comes to wearing mules for work, we would recommend going for neutral colours such as black, navy or tan. We would also suggest staying away from heavily embellished styles, so no furry mules or those with pom poms… they’re less likely to go down well!
Mules are a huge deal right now and we can see why: not only are they bang on trend and easy to style, they’re comfortable and effortless too. Whether it’s skinny jeans, dresses or shorts that you’d wear them with, we reckon that everyone should have at least one pair of mules in their summer wardrobe!
