Before you do though, don’t forget the lovely old tradition of filling those festive stockings, there’s nothing better on Christmas Eve than hanging up those stockings with the kids, either by the fireplace or at the end of the bed ready for them to be filled up with lots of goodies from Santa.
So what should you fill them with? Along with the usual sweets, coins, fruit and toys we have handpicked some little gifts of our own that will make the perfect stocking fillers for all the family…
The History of Christmas Stockings
Christmas stockings are normally an empty sock or sack that is hung up on the night before Christmas which Father Christmas fills up with sweets, toys, coins and fruit, these small gift items are often referred to as stocking fillers or stocking stuffers. In the old folk stories if a child was naughty throughout the year they would only receive a small lump of coal, however this does not happen nowadays as it is rather a cruel trick to play on them.
We can’t actually trace the origin of the stocking back as there are no records to say when the tradition of stocking fillers started but there are some stories out that have been passed down through generations and are still as popular today. The original story comes from the German/Scandinavian figure Odin. Kids would fill boots with hay, straw and carrots before leaving them near to the fireplace or chimney for Odin’s flying horse Sleipner to eat. Odin would then reward their kindness by replacing the food with small gifts and sweets. Over the years this story was adapted to the tale we all know and love today with Odin becoming St Nicholas or Santa and the flying horse is now twelve reindeer, you’ll notice sleigh sounds very similar to Odin’s horse Sleipner.
Nowadays Christmas stockings come in a range of sizes and styles and with many people enjoying home crafts, they are sometimes made by family members, another nice idea that seems to be more popular nowadays is to have the names of your family members stitched onto the stockings so Santa know who’s is whose.
** Did you know, the largest Christmas stocking ever made was a huge 168 feet by 70 feet in Italy 2011**
