Selly Oak was recorded in the Domesday Book as Escelie and has produced the oldest Grooved Ware pottery of the late Neolithic date found in the Birmingham area so far.

The oak element of the name comes from an oak tree that stood at the crossroads of Bristol Road and Oak Tree Lane and the original spot is still commemorated by an old Victorian street sign above one of the shops. The oak was felled in 1909 amid fears about its safety. The tree was cut up and the stump removed to Selly Oak Park where it remains to this day.

Selly Oak Well and Pumping Station was built in the 1870s by James Watt and Co but not formally opened until 1879 by Joseph Chamberlain and by 1881 the output was one and a quarter million gallons a day.
