The sun is shining and the air continues to be filled with the smell of BBQ’s and blissfulness. This time of year can be a little bit hit-and-miss but it seems the great British weather is being kind to us!
That said, choosing what to wear on your summer adventures can be a difficult one, especially when it comes to footwear. Do you go for those canvas shoes you know are the absolute epitome of comfort? Or do you opt for something more practical, like a pair of rugged trainers?
When it comes to summer style, we think canvas shoes for men are a sure fire winner. Not only are they super comfortable but they’re versatile too. Team them with shorts, trousers or jeans; dress them up or down, the choice is yours.
Here, we’re going to take a look at how to wear men’s canvas shoes, with a few added style tips for good measure!
What to Wear with Men’s Canvas Shoes
Choosing what to wear can be a daily chore for some men, especially when you’ve got specific plans that you’ve got to work around. It’s likely you won’t wear the same thing to a wedding as you might for a day trip out with the family (unless it’s a fairly informal wedding!).
We want to help take the hassle out of deciding, so below are a few of our favourite picks that we think are perfect the perfect pairing when wearing canvas shoes:
Jeans – If the weather is a little chilly and maybe feeling a little autumnal but you still want to keep things fresh, a pair jeans could be the answer. If you want to keep things casual, wear a well fitted pair of straight leg jeans and a classic pair lace up men’s canvas shoes.
TOP TIP: Go for canvas shoes in a lighter colour or white to really make them stand out and add to the summer vibe.
If you’d prefer to get down with your inner skater boy, then why not go for skinny jeans and a pair of slip on canvas shoes? Be sure to add a funky band t-shirt and plenty of swagger!
If you fancy keeping things a little more street, then cuffed jeans are the answer. Pair them with a trendy pair of canvas high tops. Choose a pair of jeans in a non-traditional colour to really mix things up.
Trousers – Just because you want to wear canvas shoes, it doesn’t mean you can’t dress smart! Chinos make the perfect accompaniment for canvas trainers in summer, not only are they lightweight and breathable, but they’re a classic too. If you want to keep things classy and you’re planning to pair your chinos with a shirt and tie, then canvas boat shoes are where it’s at. All the comfort and style without the casual connotations, making them the perfect choice for formal occasions such as weddings.
Shorts – There’s no way of getting through summer without shorts, and wearing them with a great pair of canvas shoes seems like a match made in heaven. Whether it’s board shorts, denim shorts or something super casual like jersey shorts; there’s no reason why canvas shoes can’t work for you.
If you fancy a slightly more grungy look, go for a pair of “cut-off” shorts, an oversized t-shirt and team them with an old skool pair of high tops. Add a pair of crisp, white sports socks and you’re going to be rockin’ with the best of ‘em!
If grunge isn’t quite your thing, then something a little more refined might work. Go for a structured pair of denim shorts that sit just above the knee. These work perfectly with classic canvas trainers as well as high tops, oh and don’t forget to forego the socks!
Which brings us to …
How to Wear Men’s Canvas Shoes Without Socks
One of the biggest things when wearing any footwear in summer, is do you really need to wear socks? From a style point of view, not wearing socks suggests that you’re prepared to take on a nice summer’s day and you’re going to do it in comfort.
Canvas shoes are especially practical when you fancy going sans-socks. Due to the fact they’re primarily made from cotton, they’re particularly good at helping to protect against sweaty feet… that doesn’t mean they won’t ever get smelly though! Take a look at our men’s shoe care guide for tips on caring for and storing your canvas shoes.
If however you’re still concerned about your feet and you would prefer to wear socks, there is an option for you if you still want to create the illusion… Some will call them trainer socks, others will call them no-show socks for obvious reasons. This means you’ll get all the protection of socks, but none of the visible cuff.
TOP TIP: If you’re not going to wear socks, be sure to avoid wearing the same pair of canvas shoes two days in a row. Give them at least 24 hours to breathe and to dry out completely before wearing them again.
So what can you pair your canvas shoes with when you don’t fancy wearing socks? Our favourite look right now are ankle grazer chinos and jeans. These are perfect for taking what would normally be a standard pair of trousers or jeans and adding a summertime twist.
If you’d like to take things a little further and you fancy embracing that hipster vibe, roll those jeans or chinos up to your mid-calf. The upside to this is you’ll also be perfectly poised for having a quick paddle in the sea! Winner!
Men’s canvas shoes are the perfect option when out and about on a sunny day; stylish, practical and most importantly, comfortable. Not only that but they’re super versatile. We definitely believe that every gent should own at least one pair!
